On a family outing
to the hot springs pool in Glenwood Springs, my father, who was a dentist, made a quick stop at a patient's house in the
canyon. I went with him to the man's little house. When we stepped in, we were greeted by freshly painted oil paintings
all over the room. Many were of bright orange canyons and turquoise skies. I was captured by the whole scene.
I looked at the paintings on the easel and remembered saying "I can do that!" That experience changed my life.
I knew then that I wanted to become an artist. That man was Gerard Curtis Delano. That Christmas I asked for an
oil painting set and was on my way. Today, as a professional artist. I find inspiration in the direct experience
of plein air painting. Whether through landscapes or still life's, I strive to communicate the color, form, atmosphere
and lighting of a specific place. Sullivan is a pastelist and oil painter who earned her BFA at the University of Colorado and
continues to study the work of artists she admires including: Delano, Carl Rungius, Maynard Dixon, Clyde Aspevig and William
Lathrop. As a full time artist since 1984, Sullivan has exhibited and won numerous awards nationally. She is a
founding member of the Montana Painters Alliance (mtpaintersalliance.com) and a member of the Pastel Society of the Northern
Rockies (psnr.net). She can often be seen painting plein air around her home in Missoula, Montana.
